In the church I currently serve this season is definitely one of exhaustion. Whether that is dealing with leadership issues, pressure to increase numbers, or apathy all around; this cycle of ministry is draining.

What I have found most helpful, as you wrote above, is finding real friendships. These friendships combine the other two elements (sabbath and relationships with God) in that the time spent with them is rest and a time to share your relationship with God without worrying about doctrine or correct speech. I once had a friend tell me prior to entering my first ministry, “Find a best friend and spend as much time as you can with that person–it’s what will get you through.” Finding that best friend is still difficult, though I have made many close friends, but as you wrote, some still feel like acquaintances.
